Fancy Stuff For Woodturners
Millettia laurentii - from Africa. The heartwood is dark brown with very close, fine black
veins. Usually straight grained with a coarse texture. This wood takes some care to work,
but the results can be stunning. I've seen some pieces of Wenge that have been
bleached and really look great, and not like anything you've ever seen. It looks splintery
in raw form, but can be used without problems.
Pictures above show end grain (L), and a flat sawn plank. At right
is a guitar using book-matched Wenge (yes, I know it's not turned,
but it still looks pretty cool.) Photos from Hobbit House.
