Microberlinia brazzavillensis - from West Africa, also commonly called Zebrano. The
heartwood is a light golden-yellow with narrow veining or streaks of dark brown to almost
black. Coarse grained, but can be worked without problems and brought to a high polish.
The trees grow fairly large and can produce big turning stock. Some of the bowl blanks
can be topped with a solid Walnut band on the rim for an elegant looking offering.
Here are the two bigger bowl blanks listed for sale, showing both the endgrain and side grain. The bigger piece
is 8" x 8" x 4" ++ SOLD ++ (what a great bowl that would make!), the other blank is 6" x 6" x 3" and quartersawn.
